THE WORLD'S FIRST RETORTABLE CARTON GAINS FDA AND USDA COMPLIANCE IN THE UNITED STATESTetra Pak's new Tetra Recart™ revolutionizes the food industry Vernon Hills, Ill. — April 30, 2002 — Tetra Pak announces that its Tetra Recart, the world's first retortable carton, has obtained Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) compliance. Serving as an alternative to traditional metal, glass and plastic-based packages, Tetra Pak's new Tetra Recart offers a competitive advantage to manufacturers of solid foods and liquid foods with particulates such as fruits, vegetables, ready-to-eat foods and pet food. Tetra Recart offers many benefits to food manufacturers. The immediate advantages are package differentiation and unique shelf impact for product updates and new product launches. Products packaged in the Tetra Recart can be distributed and merchandised ambient and are lighter and easier to stack than cans or glass jars. The carton is also a low-resource package and is 100% recyclable. The production capacity of Tetra Recart is similar to that of modern canning lines. An unprecedented efficiency for carton-based packaging systems, the Tetra Recart runs at speeds up to 24,000 packages per hour. "This is an exciting technology for Tetra Pak," said Andrew Dun, vice president, new business development, Tetra Pak. "This is not only the first time in the packaging world that retorted food has been packed in cartons, but this also represents a new business area for Tetra Pak, which is committed to expanding its food industry expertise beyond liquid food and beverage packaging." Tetra Pak and Friskies launched the first commercial application in Italy and the U.K. in May 2001. The dog food's immediate sales results and retailer adoption have proved Tetra Recart's success. Ready to share the advanced technology and packaging solution with its U.S. customers, Tetra Pak USA expects a commercial launch of the Tetra Recart by the end of 2002.
